Preparation
- Warm a large skillet over medium heat. Add a little oil.
- Sauté the diced onion and green bell pepper with a pinch of salt until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned. Drain most of the fat if needed.
- Stir in the minced garlic for 30 seconds.
- Add ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar, smoked paprika, and salt and pepper.
- Simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and glossy.
- Taste and adjust salt, sugar, or vinegar as needed.
- Toast the buns, pile on the filling, and serve hot.
Notes
For added richness, you can stir in a tablespoon of butter at the end. Optional: Top with sliced pickles or shredded cheddar cheese.
