Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients and rub it in with your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the chopped dates and cinnamon if using.
- Pour in the milk and mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the dough.
Baking
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a circle about 1 inch thick.
- Cut the dough into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with a little extra milk.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack.
Notes
These scones can be frozen after baking. Wrap tightly and store in the freezer. Warm them gently when you want a treat. Feel free to experiment with add-ins like orange zest or chopped nuts.
