Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups plain flour All-purpose flour works well.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional) For a hint of spice.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/3 cup cold butter (cubed) The colder, the better.
  • 3/4 cup pitted dates (roughly chopped) Use any variety of dates.
  • 2/3 cup milk Plus a splash more for brushing the tops.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the chopped dates.
  5. Gradually add milk and mix until just combined.
Baking
  1. Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently knead a couple of times.
  2. Pat into a round shape and cut into wedges or rounds.
  3. Place on a baking sheet and brush tops with additional milk.
  4. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

These scones are perfect with butter and honey, and can be frozen after cooling for later enjoyment. You can also experiment with variations such as adding orange zest or swapping half the flour for whole wheat for a different texture.
